The one that got away, part one

dabitch — Sunday, March 5, 2006 - 20:49

This past year, we've been house hunting. We had a tiny budget and huge dreams, so we drove south and scoured the countryside for gems. They are out there. After many duds, we found a house on Skovvej in Nørre Alslev to be a perfect match....Nørre Alslev Ejendomshandel had a house on Skovvej 12 in Nørre Alslev.

The place was built in 1914 and the same family had lived in it ever since, barely touching the house. The kitchen was still from the 20s. The bath was almost installed but then not quite in the 60s. It needed help, but it had so many nice details, like the ceiling! A diamond in the rough that no idiot had broken with a bad renovation, we could polish this place with some tender loving care.....

The walls were painted in the big posh rooms, and there were two old fashioned iron ovens for heating, that had clearly been used up until the day the old man who lived there left. He might have been born into the house head first and carried out feet first.

We wanted this gem, badly.
But the Realmaeglerne.dk from Nørre Alslev really didn't want to sell it. At least not to us. First they tried to talk us out of even seeing it "we already have bids, it's a waste of time!" they said, despite the house being a brand new entry on their website. We saw it anyway, and then called back to get papers on the house sent to our lawyer so that we could make a bid. The estate agent wanted us to commit to a fax bid without even seeing what one was bidding on, and spent a week making excuses to not send us the papers on the property. They even made vaguely threatening remarks like any spoken bid is a commitment to 10% of the bids value by law. (It's actually 1%).

Our lawyer got on their case and another week came and went. We even called the sellers lawyer, who agreed with us that the whole thing was rather unorthodox, and even told us that they have received bids on the land but not on the house. This broke our heart, as we wanted the beautiful house!
Finally, after three weeks, the estate agent said it was sold.

And here's the kicker. It was sold for less than we planned to bid.. Arses! So to anyone who plans to sell their house, don't use Real maeglerne of Nørre Alslev. You'll end up cheated.

I hope that whomever bought it takes good care of it, and renovates this gem with care - instead of demolishing it.
